Most of us attend a lot of events such as conferences, seminars, business networking events, mixers, etc. Building your network of business relationships truly is the best way to take off. Especially when you’re just starting out.
As an avid networker, I have found there are a few things that have made a huge difference in how well an event turns out for me and I wanted to share a few of those with you.
Follow these three points and you should easily see a big increase in how many people remember you and more importantly HOW they remember you most…
Show Up Early
Want to quickly become the most remembered person at any event? Show up early and meet people as they show up. By showing up early, you have an opportunity to meet people as they show up and really make a great impression on them. So many times, if the room is already full, people are in conversation already. It’s hard to get a chance to chat with them much.
If you’re the first one there, you can get them while it’s still a bit quieter. By the time things really pick up, you’ve already had a great conversation and really got to know them well.
Stand By the Door
There’s nothing better than having the best seat in the house, right?
Well, if you’re networking and at an event to meet people, everyone comes through the door. Wouldn’t that be the best place to get to meet new people?
You bet! I’ve been at events with over 1500 people and never even actually went in the room. I just greeted people as they were coming up to the door and introduced myself to them. We’d have a great chat and I’d get to know about them before they even entered the room.
Once they get inside the room, there might not have been another chance to really get to talk to them. Between all the people and the noise, sometimes it’s almost impossible once they’re in there. Right outside the room however, is a prime location to make a first impression.
Open Circle Policy
This one is one of my personal pet peeves at events…
What I mean by this is, it’s common to get 4-5 people in a circle chatting and having a great time. Have you ever tried to walk into that conversation? It sucks. You don’t want to push your way into an existing conversation and feel rude. I’ve been here before when I’ve wanted to talk to someone and felt I couldn’t get into the circle. There wasn’t an opening for me to get in.
If you’ve ever been there, you know it’s hard.
That’s why, as someone in the circle, it’s your job to make sure you stand with an opening in your group to let others come join you. Make it inviting for someone to walk into the group and start being part of the conversation.
Make a point to be more aware of what’s going on around you and you’ll notice it when the circle becomes closed.
I’ve been the new guy in the room. It’s not an easy place to be when you’re in a room of people you don’t know.
