Add Some Funny Into Your Marketing – YMU Update June 16th 2014

Harvey's Comedy ClubSo yesterday was Father’s Day and my daughter gave me one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had.

She took me to Harvey’s Comedy Club here in Portland.

First off, I love stand up. Funny thing is that I’ve watched plenty of stand up shows on TV (just watched 4 episodes of Last Comic Standing back to back just this week in fact) but I’ve never been to a comedy club before. I really had a blast. I laughed so hard I actually had tears. The headliner was wasn’t just there to “do a show” he actually had an awesome message that he was sharing with the audience about how to treat people and make the most of this crazy world. Everyone loved it!

Of course, then I had a “This is an awesome marketing lesson” moment and wanted to share with you.

We all love to be entertained. I’m an educator, trainer, teacher, speaker, etc but overall I’m an entertainer. This was brought up to me by Cindy a bit back and it’s really hit home lately.

We all have our products and services. Everything from landscaping to coffee, to coaching to web design. We all have a different “widget” that we sell.

But one thing that really makes us stand out is the emotion that we add when we share our stuff. People want to be entertained. I can teach all day long but I make the biggest impact when we’re having fun while we do it.

I’ve been teaching and speaking a lot more in the last month and I’ve seen on VERY consistent result…
The more I make them laugh the better they learn and are open to what I’m teaching.

The lesson… make them laugh more. Have fun with what your’e doing. Get them engaged and… entertain them.

Yes, it really is that simple!

Marketing is about getting your audience engaged and nothing engages an audience faster than making them laugh.

Tell A Story
People love stories. Especially if there’s a something funny that can be added to it. When I first started doing videos I used to share stories about things business owners did with their marketing that were, quite honestly… stupid. Some of the things I found were just so funny I couldn’t help but share them as “What NOT to do” scenarios. I never mentioned the person or company but it was a way to make fun of something and teach in the process. To this day I still get a ton of hits to those videos and am remembered very well by them.

Share your own experience
We’ve all been in situations that could be embarrassing, confusing or make us feel a little silly, right? So share those stories as well. What mistakes did you make in the past that you’ve learned from? Add a humorous twist to them and you’ve got gold. Share it what you learned from it and you’ll make a big impression.

People love to see that we’re just like them. By sharing your own experiences of struggle, frustration and mistakes you’re letting them know that they aren’t alone. Of course I love to add a funny spin to it as well. It’s ok to make fun of ourselves as long as it doesn’t detour from the message and shows that we’ve overcome those obstacles.

The days of “the lecture” are over. We need to be stimulated. We want to be entertained and if you can make someone laugh a bit, you’ll be remembered. If you want to stand out, be ok with making fun of life a bit. It’s one of the fastest ways to take down the walls that hold people back from getting the most from everything you have to offer.
