I Don’t Need A Website, I Have A Facebook Page

WT01-Branded-15 Have you heard this before? Have you said this before? Facebook pages have changed a lot over the years. Right now we have the ability to add things to them that provide most of the information a basic website can provide.

The feeling, especially in some industries, is also that “everyone” is on Facebook already so you can just set up a page there an you are good to go. At least every couple of months the news talks about the number of people joining and using Facebook.

But let me ask you this, would you let the person next door run your business on a daily ongoing basis? Would you hand them your keys and and put it all in their hands?

Then why in the world would you do this with your website? We have no control on Facebook. It is a free service. They allow us to use it and in exchange they are able to gather a TON of information about us and get advertising revenue from people who pay for advertising on the site.

But at its heart it is a free service. At any moment they can turn off your account completely and they don’t even have to give you a reason. No matter how much we fuss or stomp our feet, ultimately it is theirs and we have no control over it.

So why would you rely on a free service that you have absolutely no control over to house your company website? Are you willing to take a chance that all those people you have gathered will suddenly be gone tomorrow for no reason?

The other thing to realize is that contrary to popular belief or even the media there are people who are not on Facebook. I know, it is hard to believe, but it’s true.

Then there is the professional impression you want to put out there about your business. Honestly if I see a company that has a Facebook page but no website I wonder if they are going to be around very long. I wonder if they are not making enough to afford a website.

Having a website can be less than ten dollars a month. If a business is not even willing to pay that much for their business each month then I wonder how long they plan to be in business. I hesitate to do business with them since the next time I need what they offer they may or may not be around.
