You are thinking one or both of these things right now. What is a hosting account? Why do I need to have access to it?
Your hosting account is where the files for your website sit. In order to have a website you have to have a hosting account. And as the owner of that website you should have access to your hosting account.
Now if you are using a service like blogger or weebly or even if your website address includes the words wordpress.com as part of it then those are hosted for you as part of the service and you will not actually have a hosting account.
But if you have a domain name and have had a website designed for you and you pay a monthly fee to someone to keep that website up and running, you should have a hosting account.
The next question is, why do you need to have access to it?
You should have access to it because without it your website will not exist. And as the owner of the website you should have access to all aspects of that website.
You should be able to login and access any number of things available in to you as part of your hosting account. If you are not a techy person then the majority of those things will not make sense to you, but you should still have the ability to login should the need arise.
Also you want to make sure you have the ability to login so that if you need to give someone else access to your hosting account to help you with your website or even your email you can provide them with the information they need.
Sometimes when you first begin working with a website designer they will set up a hosting account for you. Or they will tell you you need to register for a hosting account with a service they recommend or require you to use.
In the future you may decide you want to move your site to a different service. Or you may decide you want to work with a different designer. Or your designer may close their doors for some reason. If you do not have access to your hosting account then you are stuck.
If you cannot login or give the new person you hire login information you will have no way to access the files that make up your website. You may also not have a way to access your domain name since sometimes they are part of the same account. If this happens you will have to start over completely from scratch.
At least twice a year I get a call from someone who needs changes made to their website, but their last web person has disappeared from the face of the Earth and they cannot find them anywhere.
The first question we ask them is can you please send over your login information for your hosting account and the website. And more times than not we hear crickets on the other end of the phone. They do not have this information. They never did and sometimes they don’t even know they SHOULD have had this information in the first place.
They want to know if we can edit their site without it. And unfortunately most of the time the answer is no. Without the ability to login and access the programming we cannot make any changes. This then means that unless they can get this information, their website is dead in the water.
They can make no changes and will have to start over from scratch. Ouch!
It is your business. It is your website. You are paying the bills. You need to have the name of the hosting company and the login information to that hosting account.
