Are You Wondering Why No One Is Calling?

WT01-Branded-07 You have a website. You posted the link to your site across social media sites and added it to the flyers you handed out. Now you are sitting in your shop waiting for the phone to ring. No ring…

You log into your Google Analytics and check to see if people are going to the website. You discover that you are getting traffic. So you keep waiting for the phone to ring. No ring…

You are stumped. You did all the right things. You created a site all about what you have to offer. You told people about the site. And you are getting traffic. So why is your phone not ringing?

Did you remember to put your phone number on the website?

I know it sounds like a stupid question…”Of course I did!” is usually the answer.

But you might want to go look. Did you place your phone number on the Contact Us page? Did you place your phone number in the header or the footer of the site? Did you add text to the Services page stating to “Call To Get Started Today” and link it over to your contact us page? Did the flyers you handed out also have the phone number so they could contact you directly without even having to go to the website?

I can’t even begin to count the number of sites I have gone to where I had to search and search to figure out how to contact them with questions I had. Or I had to dig all over the site to figure out how to register for their service or figure out how to buy what they had to offer.

Especially in today’s world of home businesses more and more people are not including contact information on their websites. They don’t include an email address because they don’t want spam. They don’t include an address because it is their house and they don’t want people to just show up on their doorstep. They don’t include a phone number because they don’t want to get sales calls from telemarketers.

We usually have a great reason for not including this information. Then we can’t understand why no one is filling out our form asking for more information. We can’t understand why the link to the survey we added to the site isn’t getting clicked. We can’t understand why we are not getting any business from our site. So we decide that in “our business a website isn’t going to work”.

The actual issue is we decided how we wanted to be contacted without considering how our prospects would want to contact us. It is not up to us to determine how to be contacted. It is up to us to be available in the ways that are comfortable to out prospects.

If my prospects would rather call me to place an order than to order directly online, then I need to focus on providing a phone number and be willing to take their phone calls.

If my prospects are searching my site at 2am looking for a way to schedule an appointment, then my site needs to offer online appointment setting. Even if that means it is a tentative appointment until I can confirm it in the morning. I still need to have the option.

And those options, whatever they may be, need to be big and bold and VERY obvious. I need to show them on every page of the site if possible. I need to tell them what to do. Tell them how to contact me.

If at all possible I need to provide them with multiple ways to do so. Have a form to submit questions. Have a phone number to call and order or clarify something they read. Have a mailing address where payments can be sent.

If you have a physical location make sure it is very obvious where you are and what your hours are so people feel confident as to when you are open and that you will be there when you say you will.

Provide obvious ways to get in touch with you. Be available. Make the contact methods about your prospects not about you.
