You remember the line from the movie? “If you build it they will come”
Well, that’s the myth so many people believe when it comes to their website. Just because you have a website doesn’t mean that anyone will come to it.
It’s like opening up a retail shop in a deserted strip mall and not even putting up a sign letting people know you’re there.
You’ve got to get the word out.
Your website should be your number one marketing tool. I like to call it the hub of your marketing, meaning you want to send as many of your other marketing funnels to your website as possible.
It’s really simple. Let’s start with your business cards. Is your website listed on your card? Is it easy to read?
And here’s the big one… Do you have a specific call to action to give someone a reason to go to your website?
Here’s my personal example. For years, I’ve had essentially a small advertisement on the back of my business cards. It’s not an ad like a “Mention this crd for 20% off”. Honestly, those don’t work so well for new people you’ve just met.
Mine is a promotion to visit my website to claim a free report I’ve written on creating a Marketing Roadmap for your business.
To me, that’s the most important thing about my card. You see, most of the time people won’t call you unless they have an immediate need and most of the time, they aren’t going to have your card handy when that need comes up.
But, if you can create something that will grab their interest and isn’t threatening (“Call me so I can pitch you on the the great stuff I have”) they will go check out what you’ve got to offer.
Think of it as a taste test for them. It’s a way to get them interested even if they don’t have an immediate need.
Once they get to the site, they enter their email address and get the report.
Now I can communicate with them on a regular basis. First off, I send them a few emails to make sure that they read the report. Doesn’t do them any good to download it and never read it. It’s like getting a sample of ice cream and sticking it in your pocket to save for later. Obviously, that isn’t going to work well for anyone involved!
What can you do to get them to go to your website and claim their “taste test”?
Do with with all your other marketing tools. Send them all to check out your free test. Then nurture them with great tips, tricks and resources for the long haul.
Now, when they are ready to buy, you will be the first person they think of because you’ve proven to them that you are knowledgeable, caring and an expert in your field.
